JEDI v DEIB

Writer's picture: NBRNBR

One skips justice, one does not.

Justice first...

Even for those who read the Bible, I once ran across this verse and it informs my journey still: "Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Mercy and truth go before Your face." - Psalm 89:14 NKJV

Not a black pencil in the image and we are not pencils.

This one is better, but we are not crayons either. We have such a hard time having a grounded conversation about this.

I have never been a fan of DEI. I have been even less of a fan of those who work in this space because it is such a reduction of what it even could be. I have only run across two people in a corporate space who approach this from a liberatory posture. Many people have book knowledge, but no embodied way of living and being about it. Yes, Resmaa, they seem to be thinking they can read a book and run a marathon. And I agree with Dr. Resmaa Menakem when he says, "Diverse from what?" Most want to hurdle this question and successfully stay at it hurdling this question. How does one do this work without truly talking about race, not everyone, but too many, and definitely the legacy mediascapes.

Honestly, DEI or DEIB is all through a white lens. That isn't a rocket science revelation though since every institution is a plantation of some kind. The elders and ancestors did not joke when they often referred to their job as "the plantation." I literally watch white people do their arguing and performative stuff over terms and all that giving "progressive, woke" and "left" a bad name. There is a difference between "being woke" and "staying woke" as well.

I can hear Resmaa saying "room, not remedy." Yeah, I am about liberatory practices and dynamics that address the power dynamics among people, that is another thing that DEI(B) does not address in context. I imagine I will be doing this until my last breath. Who is going to bury you? Another question that Resmaa asks us to consider because as Rachel Maddow mentioned in this 12 minute clip, we will need each other.

If you want to learn to play with others committed to a similar journey and build the conditioning to not constantly be annoyed and exhausted, join Black Octopus Society. Doing this won't fix it, but it will cultivate the field to benefit generations to come and those you love and those who love you.
