Mediocre Notions

Writer's picture: NBRNBR

Have you read Mediocre? What did you think?

I do understand people's aversion to the subject, but we cannot build an anti-racist society without confronting it.

For me, it is about addressing an issue that has been an undertow to society.

There seems to be a deep seated assumption that the standard that white people have been living is a high standard. Not that the system created to benefit them has been keeping down the greatness of others (who is seen as the competition in that system who would show up the lie - why some really hated President Obama). It is also why committed racists say things like we don't know our place.

Maintaining this lie (white supremacy) helps no one.

For example, when a BIPoC student/employee blows the curve, what they have to contend with to live through people's acceptance of that truth is the most exhausting thing. Always confronting the cognitive dissonance/upset it is for some white people is a drag.

Another example is the way United Statesians think of language. Most people on the planet speak multiple languages, only in the US have people created a one language standard.

Please be willing to deconstruct all the ways these lies are a setup for failure.
