Rules, Rules, Rules

Writer's picture: NBRNBR

I tell those who are in the Anti-Racist Education group that anti-racism is not about rules, although many people are teaching that way.

For example, so many people ask me what Black people want to be called. I tell them to "ask the Black people in your life" (if there are any outside of work).

So many people, mostly people practicing whiteness want information to impress bodies of culture or rules of behavior to get over somehow it seems. It is involved in the performance of allyship. Some people are looking for information, not heart transformation.

Heart transformation is what is needed.

My friend said that it is all about desire.

Yes, one needs to become aware of the their worldview, like the glasses some of us forget we have on through which we view the world. We also need to understand what's driving our actions, not so we can pretend that we have it together, but to be able to be human with one another, making amends through celebrating when necessary.

Getting clear about the desires driving our interactions and engagements helps us to be more authentic with those we're with as much as we are willing.

Some of us are so desperate for "good" white people that we allow people to get away with spewing some stuff they learned but nothing that has changed their hearts - see white saviorism...
