Learning the history of commerce and observing the history of the exploitation economy, I see why the oldest profession is the oldest.
The ruling class has always seemed to use someone's indebtedness as a means of control and a door to the abuse of that power/exploitation. That is why I refuse to let people use it on me. Growing up in a narcissistic family dynamic and breaking out of it at sixteen years old and unlearning the dynamics sure helps in understanding so much of this world. No wonder that prostitution of all shades is the oldest profession. The status of women at the time and throughout history has always had us on a greased slide to exploitation.
The day that a man proposed that a woman (or man) consent to sell her sexuality for a price, was the beginning of the end of honor in that area of human activity.
It has only gotten worse and more insidious from generation to generation. ✊🏾 to those who don't feel they have to succumb to this means of exchange. 🔥 bu'n those who exploit people for profit.
I say "please don't gain the world and lose your soul" to any of you involved in this at any level and any shade of it. Since I don't know everything, I hear that there are those for whom this profession isn't a problem. That's great, I just think, just like there's Michael Jordan, everyone can't be a Jordan, and in this case, would you want to? 🙄🥺
Even though Nikole Hannah-Jones is referencing the incomparable legend, Cicely Tyson in this Tweet, it bears discussing in this light because the entertainment industry is a bastion of exploitation and Ms. Tyson never sold her soul for a role or any other limelight. I do believe that those who live their personal convictions bring the jealousy of others, little do they know that they can too. Thanks to Ms. Tyson, among others for showing us that path over such a long career.
I am so thankful for so many journalists these days but, thanks for what you've contributing to our public discourse Ms. Hannah-Jones!
