I have been thinking about European indigeneity and the gap of time between when they left what is now known as Africa for a while now, especially since seeing advertisements for the plethora of shows that depict the Vikings and other indigenous European cultures.
Then, I was watching Finding Your Roots, where one of the guests’ ancestors were convicted of witchcraft.
I always thought of witch trials as a way of controlling and punishing women, but when I considered the Loki character in The Vikings, I thought more.
Then I did some additional reading. I reflected on the controlling characteristic of the church and read this article about the competition between Constantine’s two legacies - the Protestant and Catholic church.
Maybe the witch trials were the system’s first attacks on indigenous cultures - it makes sense that it may have started internally first anyway.
