What is Prayer?

Writer's picture: NBRNBR

I was having a great conversation with one of my beloved fam yesterday. What emerged was this notion about prayer. I was sharing about how I have shifted my perspective about God and spirituality in general.

I referenced my earlier blog about being Cells in the Body of God inspired by a conversation with my friend Corey. I also shared about how I have adopted distinguishing as Resmaa Menakem often does that I don’t mean “Sky Daddy” when I say, “God." It just resonated with my sensibilities.

Probably because I have been highly influenced by Rastafarian culture since I was much younger as well, I hold on to the understanding of “word, sound having power.” One of my big brothers during my college years told me the term “Nommo”, apparently having the same meaning. I have always imagined words coming out of people’s mouths and creating a vibration/a ripple in the atmosphere. It is probably why, when I saw Dune in the eighties, I understood the Fremen’s weapons and the Bene Gesserits use of "the voice." There are also countless references in the Bible about the power of the tongue and how it “should” be utilized.

I briefly explained to my bro Daryl that I see prayer as a ripple that has influence and touches all receptive beings and ripples back as manifestation if there is enough resonance/readiness for activation. If there is not, it is like a seed planted fertilizing future readiness. I believe that the prayers and desires of our ancestors are activated when there is critical mass drawing on a desire for transformation like alchemy. I believe that is what causes movement in the us as a collective.

I am not going to take time to discuss the thwarting aspects of “ego”, “shadow” or “evil” right now, because in general, I don’t give it energy.

As I have said to others countless times, religion is just a cultural expression of our relationship to spirituality. How we pray differs, but what we are tapping into is the same depending on if our intention is to build or destroy.

I also spent a little time conveying to another friend/mentee that being a “high vibration” being is relative. There is no arrival to the superiority that some seem to seek. It is just like finding and realizing one’s people, it is either compatible or it is not. No reason to fight or demean. Like my friend Logynn says, “Keep sorting.”

I go throughout my day praying, sensing and paying attention – tuned in. I hope you will also in your own way.
